Interaction Designer

Stimulant is looking for a client-facing interaction designer to join us in our San Francisco headquarters.Stimulant’s work sits at the exciting intersection of the analog and digital worlds. Our talented team of designers, developers and project managers collaborates closely with Fortune 500 companies, global brands and local institutions to craft never-before-seen interfaces for “computers that don’t look like computers.” This interaction designer will help specify and design interfaces for interactive installations, unusual form-factor devices and unique digital experiences. Much of our work involves extending brands into new channels and spaces, through projects which leverage touch, computer vision, gesture, voice, and other kinds of sensors and emerging interface paradigms. Stimulant is a small, tight-knit agency where having flexibility of thought and a malleable working process are paramount. Our ideal interaction designer will be able to:

  • Speak, write, and sketch as well as he/she can design
  • Sling wireframes and diagrams with the best of them
  • Hybridize deliverables as project needs dictate
  • Revel in extreme levels of detail
  • Apply effective heuristics and reasoning to his/her own work to ensure beauty, flow, consistency, brand relevance, and business alignment
  • Rapidly synthesize information and learnings into innovative ideas
  • Confidently sell creative concepts to collaborators and clients
  • Rely on theoretical underpinnings but be practical about real-world solutions
  • Think improvisationally in client reviews and work sessions
  • Focus on the needs of the project above all other considerations
  • Give solid and insightful crit to others

An interaction designer at Stimulant needs to be deeply conversant in both Illustrator and OmniGraffle, have several years’ of services-industry/agency experience, and have at least some experience presenting his/her own work to clients. You don’t need to be a coder, but you must be able to understand code and frameworks as materials and media, just as an artist understands pencils or oil paints. Years of experience in interaction design are required, but what you’ve done and the quality of your work matters more than what your degree is or exactly how long you’ve been in the industry. If you’ve got additional experience in motion, sound, narrative, film, ergonomics, industrial design, or architecture, that’s beneficial but not required. A flexible creative mind, willingness to riff on ideas in real time, and attention to detail are the essence of what we’re looking for, as well as commitment to integrity, transparency, and humor.Stimulant’s studio environment strives for balance, fun, and collaboration. We offer a comprehensive benefits package including medical/dental/vision, commuter and mobile phone benefits and a 401(k). We are located in a creative space in the heart of San Francisco’s thriving Mission district, 1 block from BART and the best lunch options you can find in the city. Our size allows every person to cross-train, collaborate continuously, and make a huge impact on our projects, process, and culture.Interested?
